The regional Inuit organization representing the northwestern Nunavut communities of:

Language Bureau - CLEY
Government of Nunavut

  • The Language Bureau is responsible for the development of new terminology for both Inuktitut and Inuinnaqtun.
  • The Translation Bureau translates all government documents into Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun, English and French.
  • The Language Bureau is an office of the Department of CLEY, based in Kugluktuk (Qurluqtuq).

Languages Commissioner of Nunavut

  • an independent officer appointed by the Legislative Assembly;
  • ensures the Government of Nunavut complies with the Official Languages Act and the language provisions of other acts and regulations;
  • responds to complaints from the public;
  • promotes the official languages of Nunavut.

  • An organization representing Nunavut's French-speaking population with a cultural centre and radio station in Iqaluit.

Kitikmeot Heritage Society

A volunteer-run, non-profit organization, the Kitikmeot Heritage Society preserves, promotes and celebrates the history, culture, language and diversity of the people of the Kitikmeot. They are dedicated, in part, to recording and publishing the traditional stories and place names of the Inuinnaqtun speaking communities of western Nunavut by:

  • collecting and archiving the oral histories of the elders;
  • preserving archaeological sites through oral history and archaeological study;
  • collecting historical information and archives;
  • using the information collected to promote and preserve Inuinnaqtun and Inuktitut;
  • developing educational and learning materials; and
  • promoting and celebrating the cultures and traditions of the people.

Kivalliq Inuit Association

The regional Inuit organization representing the following communities along the Hudson Bay coast:

  • Arviat,
  • Whale Cove (Tikirarjuaq),
  • Rankin Inlet (Kangiqliniq),
  • Chesterfield Inlet (Igluligaarjuk),
  • Repulse Bay (Naujaat),
  • Baker Lake (Qamanit'tuaq), and

  • Supports the development of reading and writing skills in Nunavut through a variety of projects in English, Inuktitut and French.

Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI)

An Inuit organization representing all Inuit beneficiaries of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement (NLCA). NTI is partially responsible for implementing the land claim and runs a number of language programmes through its social development department (formerly the Nunavut Social Development Council).

The Pirurvik Centre exists to enhance vitality and wellbeing within the sphere of Inuit culture and language. It is a unique company combining social needs with the flexibility of a business approach.
